Have you ever admired a landscape or garden, but not been able to identify much more than the rose bushes or daffodils? Chances are you have laid your eyes on the Green Velvet Boxwood not knowing what it was, and not knowing how awesome of a shrub it really is! Boxwoods in general get kind of a bad rap but the Green Velvet variety is a shining star amidst the flashier flowers and plants that are out there.
Why do Boxwoods have a bad rap, you ask? Smell. I mean a straight up stink! While only certain varieties are known to smell like cat or dog urine, all boxwoods have been put into this category, and unfairly I might add! The Green Velvet variety does not stink and has many popular and positive attributes for your landscape or your garden.
The Green Velvet Boxwood will mature at three to four feet in height, which is the perfect height for a shrub in your landscape plan! This variety of Boxwood also grows in a compact, rounded shape and maintains its shape throughout maturity. This Boxwood gives the illusion of being pruned, without having to use your energy to actually prune it! You can take credit for how wonderful these shrubs looks in your garden though, we won’t tell.
This variety of Boxwood is an evergreen. When spring rolls around in late April to early May, this rich and vibrant green shrub will grow little yet very subtle cream-colored flowers to attract a bee or two, but will remain very inconspicuous.
As stated above, there is no need to prune this shrub because it will naturally maintain its shape. To add to its low maintenance checklist, you don’t have to worry about where to plant it in regards to sun exposure. The Green Velvet Boxwood can thrive in either full-sun or in a shady section of your property and adapts to most any kind of soil. Its almost like a rotisserie, you can set it and forget it!
Winter can wreak havoc on your landscaping when it comes to deer and other hungry winter critters. While some of your other shrubs and plants might seem like a tasty snack to these pests, the Green Velvet Boxwood is left unscathed! This shrub contains a natural toxic alkaloid which is very undesirable and even toxic to deer and other pests. In a deer-eat-plant world, you must become smarter than the deer!
Boxwood was introduced to the United States in the mid 1600’s, making it a historical and colonial timepiece in landscaping history! Decorating historical landmarks like the White House and George Washington’s Mount Vernon, the Green Velvet Boxwood sets out to impress. You might not want wooden teeth like our first president, but you can share in his love of landscaping!
